District-Wide Reading Initiative

Recreational Reading Initiative

In an effort to strengthen the reading skills of all our elementary students, the Dudley-Charlton Regional School District is implementing a school-wide independent reading initiative that will help to increase the amount of time students are reading outside of school. Research consistently supports self-selected, recreational reading as a key component in improving students’ reading proficiency. The pleasurable connections that children build with print when they make their own personal reading choices are as important as the academic gains associated with recreational reading. This plan to increase recreational reading will begin in kindergarten and continue through fourth grade.

Highlights of the plan are as follows:

1. All students will be reading or be read to as a component of their regular homework.

2. Students will be able to make their own recreational reading choices.

3. There will be a check-in system for students to record the great books they are reading

outside of school.

4. Nightly reading minutes will be developmentally appropriate for each grade level.

Kindergarten	10-15 minutes daily/ 45 minutes per week
First Grade	10-15 minutes daily/ 50 minutes per week
Second Grade	15 minutes daily/ 60 minutes per week
Third Grade	15–20 minutes daily/ 60 minutes per week
Fourth Grade	20 minutes daily/ 75 minutes per week

Research indicates that students’ reading performance is positively affected by the amount of time they spend reading outside of school. The goal of the Dudley-Charlton Regional School System is to improve all our students’ reading skills while simultaneously turning them into “lifelong readers,” not just “school time” readers.
